At the door to 84-B Kate didn’t hesitate, knowing she was about to step over a line. “Would you like to come up?” At this moment, she knew she was being reckless. She didn’t care. Thanasis responded with a broad smile and affirmative tilt of his head. In the ride home in the taxi, their kisses had been soft. Sweet. Restrained. As the elevator climbed to the fifth floor, something else entered. Passion. Urgency.

Barely had the door to her apartment closed than Kate and Thanasis were in each other’s arms. In high school, Kate had discovered she enjoyed passion, necking in a parked car at the edge of a cotton field. It was how teenagers in the Bible Belt dealt with natural urges, also known as sin in their community.

After the devastating end to her marriage with Jim, she stayed away from intimacy for almost a year. But its return came with a new intensity amid the loosened sexual restrictions of the ’70s and the gift of marijuana in the Rocky Mountain highs of Colorado.

Kate wasn’t sure how things were in Greece regarding sexual proprieties, but her pleasure in sex was something she’d brought with her. Now, she abandoned any reluctance and pulled Thanasis into the double bed in the bedroom off the hallway.

They fit together surprisingly well, and their lovemaking was both easy and satisfying. Afterward, Kate nuzzled into the softness of his neck, just below his beard. Eventually, he sat up and kissed the top of her head. “I will go now. I do not want to be a surprise for your neighbors.” His voice had a mischievous tone.

“You don’t think it’s a good idea to make them jealous of their resident American?” Kate asked, propping on her side. She fastened the sheet under her arms and watched Thanasis gather his clothes. Damn. He was handsome. In the dimness of the bedside lamp, Kate could make out broad shoulders that narrowed at the waist. She glanced briefly at the lower half of his physique before pulling herself to a sitting position.

“Do you want coffee tomorrow?” he asked as he buckled his belt.

“Yes, but no. I’m going to see my friends tomorrow at their farm. Monday night?” she asked.

Thanasis signaled agreement with a nod of his head. “Yeero stees octo?” asking if “around eight” would work. Kate had learned for most Greeks, there was no such thing as an exact time designation. Around was the closest it got.

Thanasis approached the bed, and they both leaned in for a kiss. Kate watched him leave, then listened for footsteps on the marble floor and the click of the front door closing.

Those sounds and the groaning elevator gears that signaled his exit would become part of a new routine. She and Thanasis met a few evenings during the week and spent Saturday nights together, except for the ones she was at the farm. They were becoming a couple.
